In a ceremony yesterday at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, members of the Combat Arms Team presented Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz, superintendent of the USCGA, with the trophy the squad won during competition at the Scholastic Steel Challenge 2011 Fall Collegiate Championship.

SCSA Announces Dates of 2012 Steel Challenge

BURLINGTON, Wash. — The Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), the national governing body for the sport of speed shooting, has announced the official dates of next year’s Steel Challenge. The 2012 Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships will take place November 1-4 at the Universal Shooting Academy in Frostproof, Florida.

Competition will begin Thursday, November 1, with the Open and Iron Sight Rimfire Pistol division events. Friday marks the first day of two days of centerfire pistol events including the Limited, Production and Revolver contests. Competition wraps up Saturday with the high-speed action of the Open pistol event.

Shooters wishing to compete in the 2012 Steel Challenge are encouraged to mark their match calendars and visit www.SteelChallenge.com for regular updates, including announcements about the match hotel, shooters’ banquet, sponsors and early registration discount.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy Picks Up Second Consecutive SSC Collegiate Championship

EPPING, N.H. – The U.S. Coast Guard Academy claimed their second Scholastic Steel Challenge (SSC) title in a row by winning the Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Fall Championship hosted by Sig Sauer and held November 12 at the Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, N.H.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Combat Arms Team, who won the SSC Spring Championship this past May by 79.52 seconds with a combined time of 3363.15 seconds, posted a final time in the Fall Championship of 292.86 seconds, but outpaced the University of Vermont Gun Cats A-squad by the tighter margin of 28.35 seconds.

“The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Combat Arms Team remains the top collegiate team in SSC competition but there’s no denying that they will have to keep an eye on their New England neighbors at the University of Vermont whose Gun Cats are clearly stalking the cadets and look ready to pounce,” said Scott Moore, director of the Scholastic Steel Challenge.

The USCGA’s first squad was led once again by Cadet Barton Nanney who posted the fastest individual time of 63.86 seconds followed by the second overall shooter Cadet Jonathan Sapundjieff (69.44), Cadet Jacob Naum (81.93) and Cadet Alex Webber (77.63).

The Gun Cats’ A-squad of Graham Cochran, Jeff Hammersmith, Takeshi Horiguchi and Chris Stecyk finished with a time of 321.21 seconds. Horiguchi led the Gun Cats’ effort and finished third overall in 73.41 seconds.

Third place went to the UVM B-squad with 432.66 seconds followed by the USCGA second squad (460.12), UVM C-squad (494.87), USCGA third squad (578.88),Yale (617.24) and the UVM Lady Gun Cats (718.29).

The names of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s winning Combat Arms Team shooters will be placed on a traveling trophy sponsored by Joseph Chiarello & Co., the firearms industry’s leading insurance provider, which will be contested at next year’s Fall Championship.

The next major event on the SSC collegiate schedule will be the Army Strong Collegiate Shooting Championships hosted by the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit at Fort Benning, Ga. March 13-18, 2012. The Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Championship is scheduled to take place March 17-18.

The Scholastic Steel Challenge is a national team-oriented youth shooting program developed by the Steel Challenge Shooting Association and funded in part by a grant from the National Shooting Sports Foundation. The program is open to young men and women ages 12 to 20 and offers them the opportunity to compete as a four person team for a national title in the action pistol discipline of speed shooting.

Earlier this year the program was expanded to offer college teams the opportunity to participate in the competition format.

From the beginning, industry support for the Scholastic Steel Challenge has been strong with the program picking up sponsorship from Action Target, Atlanta Arms & Ammo, Brownells, Glock, GT Target Stands, Joseph Chiarello & Co., MGM Targets, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network, Precision Delta, Safariland, Smith & Wesson, Winchester Ammunition and the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance.

Sig Sauer Hosts Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Fall Championship

BURLINGTON, Wash. – The Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA) announced that the organization’s Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Fall Championship will be hosted by firearms maker Sig Sauer at its training facility, the Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, N.H., on November 12.

Among those schools expected to compete are the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, University of Vermont, Harvard University and Yale University, as well as a local high school team, Wayland High School from Massachusetts.

Steel Challenge Comes To Harvard, Mass.

HARVARD, Mass. - The Harvard Sportsmen’s Club announced they will host their first Steel Challenge Shooting Association sanctioned Steel Challenge speed shooting match, complete with all eight Steel Challenge stages, on Saturday, November 5, 2011.

The popular Steel Challenge format offers a fun, yet challenging, competition structure that’s ideally suited for new as well as experienced shooters looking to expand their shooting sports experience. Shooters can compete in the match in a variety of categories including Open Pistol, Iron Sight Pistol, Production, Open Revolver, Iron Sight Revolver, Open Rimfire Pistol, Iron Sight Rimfire Pistol, Open Rimfire Rifle and Iron Sight Rimfire Rifle.

“We have had a great response from club members and local shooters to the announcement of our first official Steel Challenge match and, weather permitting, we are expecting 80 to 100 shooters to enter the match,” said match organizer Paul Dandini.

In addition to the strong response from shooters, the Harvard Steel Challenge has also garnered enthusiastic support from the firearms industry. Smith & Wesson is joining the National Shooting Sports Foundation and Safariland as a platinum sponsor of the Steel Challenge which marks its 30th anniversary this year when the match gets underway in Piru, Calif. August 18-21.

NSSF Returns As Steel Challenge Platinum Sponsor

SEDRO-WOOLLEY – The Steel Challenge Shooting Association (SCSA), the national governing body for the sport of Speed Shooting, announced that the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), trade association for the firearms industry, is once again supporting the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships as a platinum sponsor.

The Steel Challenge will take place August 18-21 in Piru, Calif. This year marks the 30th anniversary since the first Steel Challenge, and the final year the match will be held in the Golden State.

“We’re extremely pleased to once again have the support of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. NSSF first sponsored the Steel Challenge in 2002, hosting a banquet for competitors and their families. This year the NSSF Hospitality & Awards Banquet has moved to Saturday evening and will serve as the official closing ceremony for the match,” said Scott Moore, Steel Challenge sponsor relations. In addition to sponsoring the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships, NSSF is also a major supporter of SCSA’s Scholastic Steel Challenge program for youth and collegiate shooters.

“Participation in target shooting recently reached an all-time high thanks to competitions and programs like the Steel Challenge, the Scholastic Steel Challenge and other efforts that raise awareness of safe and responsible firearms ownership and use,” said Chris Dolnack, NSSF senior vice president and chief marketing officer. “We’re proud to support the Steel Challenge World Speed Shooting Championships again and look forward to the excitement and fun this competition brings to shooters and spectators.” Since the first Steel Challenge in 1981, the World Speed Shooting Championships have grown into the premier exhibition of speed shooting in the world and routinely draws the fastest shooters from around the globe.

U.S. Coast Guard Academy Takes SSC Collegiate Spring Championship

EAST GRANBY, Conn. – The motto of the U.S. Coast Guard is ‘Semper Paratus’ which means ‘Always Ready’ and that’s exactly what the cadets of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy were when they took on, and beat, the University of Vermont, Harvard University, Yale University and a squad from Wayland High School to claim the first Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Spring Championship.

The cadets outpaced second place UVM by 79.52 seconds with a final winning time of 363.15 seconds. Cadet Barton Nanney led the team, finishing first overall with a time of 79.46 seconds and a stage win on both Speed Option and Roundabout. Finishing second overall was Cadet Alex Webber with 89.67seconds followed by Cadet Jake Naum, fourth place overall, with 96.22 seconds. Cadet Jon Sapundjieff, who took top honors on Five to Go finished fifth overall with 97.80 seconds.

“The U.S. Coast Guard Academy’s Combat Arms Team put in an outstanding performance at the Collegiate Spring Championship. As SSC expands at the collegiate level, the cadets are likely to remain at, or near, the top of each match if this weekend’s shooting is any indication,” said Scott Moore, director of the Scholastic Steel Challenge.

The University of Vermont’s Shooting Sports Club finished second with a combined team time of 442.67 seconds, led by Jeffrey Hammersmith who finished seventh overall with 99.27 seconds. Chris Stecyk placed eighth overall with 99.40 seconds while William Cain and Takeshi Horiguchi finished 10th and 11th overall with times of 116.44 and 127.56 seconds respectively.

The only non-collegiate team competing in the match finished third. Made up of students from Massachusetts’ Wayland High School, the squad posted a final time of 458.88, just 16.21 seconds behind Vermont.

Jesse Goddard, who finished third overall in the match with a time of 91.75 seconds, led the Wayland shooters. Helping propel Wayland into third was John Monahan who took top honors on Smoke & Hope, the only stage the Coast Guard Academy cadets did not win, and finished sixth overall with 98.37 seconds. Will Gunshenan and Derek Kaufman rounded out the Wayland effort with 130.35 and 138.41 seconds each.

Harvard’s team, which included shooters who had little or no experience with pistol shooting, finished fourth with a team time of 690.51 seconds. Alvin Siu led the Harvard squad with a final time of 136.78 seconds followed by Kip Christianson with 157.39 seconds, William Marks with 180.53 seconds and Lila Nieves-Lee with 215.81 seconds.

The Yale squad, which also featured shooters with limited pistol experience but, like Harvard, unlimited enthusiasm, took fifth with a team time of 717.23 seconds. Brian Lee led the Yale effort by finishing ninth overall with a time of 108.38 seconds. Lee was followed by Edward Paulino with 165.37 seconds, Justin Hart with 211.83 seconds and Dan Bersak with a match time of 231.65 seconds.

Held at the Hartford Gun Club and hosted by firearms make Smith & Wesson, the Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Spring Championship marks the program’s expansion to the collegiate level.

The next major collegiate event on the SSC schedule will be the Scholastic Steel Challenge Collegiate Fall Championship which will be hosted by Sig Sauer and take place at the Sig Sauer Academy located in Epping, N.H.

From the beginning, industry support for the Scholastic Steel Challenge has been strong with the program picking up sponsorship from Action Target, Atlanta Arms & Ammo, Brownells, Glock, GT Target Stands, MGM Targets, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the Outdoor Wire Digital Network, Precision Delta, Safariland, Smith & Wesson, Winchester Ammunition and the Youth Shooting Sports Alliance.
